About the Elevator Music sound

Aggressively pleasant, engineered to be heard without ever being listened to, and originally supplied by a company called Muzak that studied exactly how to pull that off. The blandness is a design achievement rather than a failure. As a meme sound it thrives on discomfort: an argument nobody will break, a question nobody will answer, the pause after somebody says something they cannot take back. It turns dead air into a hotel lobby, which is considerably crueller than shouting. Soothing, sterile, savage in context.

OriginClassic hold/elevator muzak, the official soundtrack of awkward waiting.
