About the Encara Messi sound
Catalan radio commentary from April 2007, recorded while Messi ran most of Getafe's defence out of the picture and finished a goal people still measure against Maradona. The commentator repeats his name in rising disbelief, and because the delivery is fast and the accent unfamiliar to most of the internet, English speakers heard Ankara instead of the Catalan word. Ankara Messi stuck — a mishearing now far better known than the phrase it mangled. TikTok layered it over a dreamy remix in 2021 and the clip escaped football entirely. Plenty of those videos contain no ball at all.
