About the Windows XP Startup sound

Four seconds of pure early-2000s optimism, composed by Bill Brown and heard by more human beings than most symphonies will ever manage. The XP chime meant the family computer had finished thinking, the desktop with the green hill was loading, and the phone line was about to be occupied for an hour. It is genuinely well made, a rising figure that resolves rather than simply stopping, and that is why it aged into nostalgia instead of embarrassment. Quite an emotional load for a machine that mostly ran Solitaire.

OriginThe boot chime from Microsoft Windows XP (2001).
