About the Dial Tone sound

North American dial tone: 350 Hz and 440 Hz sounded together, the exact noise of lifting a landline receiver in 1995. The two-tone design was deliberate, since a single frequency could be mimicked by a voice or by stray noise, so the network chose a pair no human could accidentally produce. Younger listeners hear a mysterious drone. Everyone else hears their childhood kitchen. Use it for instant retro-telephone atmosphere in edits, as a they-hung-up-on-me punchline, or as the most confusing notification tone currently available.

OriginPrecise synthesis of the standard North American dial tone (350+440 Hz).
