About the Flickering Neon sound

Electrical buzz with a stutter in it, the sound of a tube one bad night away from going out entirely. Sound designers use it as shorthand for somewhere nobody maintains: a motel corridor, an underpass, the back room of a bar in a film that is about to turn nasty. The buzz does the acting. Pair it with almost any dim shot and the location instantly reads as neglected, without a word of dialogue explaining why. Loop it under a conversation at low level and viewers will decide the scene is unsafe long before anything happens.
