About the New Year's Ball Drop Countdown sound

Ten, nine, eight. No countdown on the planet is more collectively experienced, complete with a crowd in Times Square who have been standing in the cold for eleven hours and cannot leave to find a toilet. The ball drop is genuinely unusual as rituals go: a million people counting backwards in unison for no functional reason at all. It works for any moment that deserves ceremony, from a product launch to a microwave finishing. Play it in a room and watch everybody instinctively join in somewhere around three, without deciding to.

OriginThe Times Square New Year's Eve countdown.
