About the Lightsaber Ignition sound

Ben Burtt built the most famous sound effect in cinema out of two accidents: the idling hum of an old film projector motor, and the buzz a broken television made when he walked a live microphone past it. Combine them, add doppler shift for movement, and you have a weapon audiences believed in instantly despite it not existing. The snap-hiss of ignition is the part everybody imitates. Play it when drawing any weapon at all, including a strongly worded reply that you have been drafting in your head since lunchtime.

OriginThe lightsaber ignition from Star Wars, created by Ben Burtt.
