An ARP 2600 synthesiser, a microphone, and Ben Burtt whistling and squeaking into it until the result stopped sounding human. That is the entire vocabulary of the most expressive character in Star Wars. Audiences understood every line without a single word being spoken, which is a remarkable achievement: the beeps carry sarcasm, alarm, exasperation and real affection. No child has ever needed subtitles. Play it to respond to anything at all without committing yourself to an actual opinion. C-3PO will translate, badly and at length.
