About the Waterphone sound

If you have watched a horror film in the last forty years you have heard a waterphone, even if you have never seen one. It is a real instrument — a stainless steel bowl with tuned rods around the rim and water sloshing about inside, invented by Richard Waters in the late 1960s. Bow it and you get a wavering, seasick drone that no synthesiser has ever quite matched. Sound designers have leaned on it for decades of film scares. Three seconds is all you need to make ordinary footage feel deeply wrong.

OriginThe waterphone, an acoustic instrument invented by Richard Waters, long used in horror film sound design.
