Cat Soundboard

Cats occupy a strange position in internet audio. They are the most photographed animal online and among the least recorded, because a cat will not perform on cue and everybody who owns one knows it. What circulates instead is a small, fiercely specific set of clips: a handful of real meows, one or two purrs, and a much larger pile of cats that have been edited into saying things.

About the Cat Soundboard

The real recordings are here and they do the job. A clean meow for a text tone or a video cut, a long purr that works better than most white noise, and the Minecraft cat for anyone who learned their animal sounds from a video game rather than an animal. These are the ones people actually download, because a genuine meow is harder to find online than it has any right to be.

Then there is the other half of the board, which is where the internet actually lives. Maxwell, the spinning cat that soundtracked an entire year of edits. Huh cat, the single most reusable expression of confusion ever committed to video. Banana cat crying, which is somehow both unbearable and extremely funny. Pluh. The Discord kitten, and a cat laugh that nobody can explain the origin of and everybody recognises anyway.

Every button plays on tap and every clip downloads as a free MP3, with no account and no signup. If you came here for a notification sound rather than a joke, the clean meow and the purr are the two to take.

Cat Soundboard FAQ

The questions people ask most about these sounds.

What Is the Maxwell Cat Sound?

Maxwell is the grey cat that spins in place to music, and the clip attached to him has been pasted under more edits than almost any other animal sound of recent years. The cat is real and the spinning is an animation; the audio that travels with him changes depending on which version of the meme you met first, which is why people searching for it often cannot describe what they are looking for.

Can I Use a Meow as My Text Tone?

That is one of the main reasons people download it. The clean meow here is short, which is what a text tone needs, and it cuts through background noise better than most default alerts because nothing else on a phone sounds remotely like it. On iPhone you will need to convert the MP3 to a ringtone file first; on Android you can drop it straight into the Notifications folder.

Why Does My Cat React to These?

Some will and some will not. A recorded meow carries none of the scent or body language a real cat uses, so most cats treat it as a curiosity rather than another animal, and plenty ignore it completely. Played loudly or repeatedly it can stress an animal out, so it is worth keeping that in mind before testing the theory on your own cat.

Are These Free to Download?

Free of charge, every one, with no account needed. Free of charge is not the same as free of copyright though. The plain animal recordings are generic foley, but the meme clips belong to whoever made them, so personal use is fine and putting them in something you monetise is a different question.
