Scream Soundboard

Screaming is the oldest sound effect there is, and editors keep finding new work for it. A scream lands before anyone has read the caption, survives being compressed into unlistenable mush, and reads the same in every language on earth. That combination is why the clips on this board keep outliving the videos they came from.

About the Scream Soundboard

The Wilhelm scream is the aristocrat of the group. It was recorded in 1951 for the western Distant Drums, took its name from Private Wilhelm, a character shot by an arrow in a 1953 film, and sat in a stock library until sound designer Ben Burtt dug the original reel out and slipped it into Star Wars. Hundreds of films have since hidden it somewhere in the mix as a wink to anyone paying attention.

The modern half of the board arrived from streams and short-form video. Fahhh turns up in four states here, including the earrape version, a slowed one, and the whole thing played backwards. IShowSpeed contributes the most famous scream in streaming, Scout's death cry comes from Team Fortress 2, and a Russian kid playing Minecraft supplies a scream that needs no translation whatsoever. Goku has two, because powering up in Dragon Ball Z was never a quiet business.

Animals are unfairly good at this. The screaming goat set off a whole meme wave in 2013. The marmot's shriek sounds dubbed and is not: marmots really do produce that piercing alarm whistle to warn the colony about eagles. There is a pigeon, a rubber chicken, and Tom from Tom and Jerry, whose scream has been the standard sound of cartoon agony since long before any of this.

Press any button to hear it. Each sound page has a free MP3 download and a copy-paste embed code, with no account and no waiting. Turn your volume down first if you are wearing headphones, because several of these were deliberately pushed past the point of distortion.

Scream Soundboard FAQ

The questions people ask most about these sounds.

What is the Wilhelm scream and why is it in everything?

A stock scream recorded in 1951 for Distant Drums, named after a character shot by an arrow in a 1953 western. Ben Burtt found the original reel and used it in Star Wars, which turned an anonymous library clip into an in-joke between sound editors. Hundreds of films have smuggled it in since, usually when somebody falls.

What is the Fahhh sound?

A short, strangled scream that spread through TikTok edits and stuck around because it survives being destroyed. This board carries the plain version, the earrape version, a slowed one, and the reversed clip people call HHHAF. The whole family has its own page too, if you want them side by side rather than mixed in here.

Is the screaming marmot real or dubbed?

Real. It sounds exactly like a man overdubbed it, which is most of the joke, but marmots genuinely make that shriek. It is an alarm whistle, used to tell the rest of the colony that something is circling overhead. The clip has been recycled through reaction videos for the better part of two decades.

Can I download these scream sounds as MP3s?

Yes, free, with no signup anywhere in the process. Every button links to its own page, and each page carries the MP3 plus an embed code. Editors mostly take the Wilhelm scream for falls, Fahhh for shock, and the animal ones for anything that deserves less dignity than it is currently receiving.
